How do I get started measuring my carbon footprint? (Tyler Cole, Freightwaves)

#2 (1)

If you’re just getting started on your decarbonization journey, it’s important to recognize that it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Ballpark estimates leading to carbon offset purchases will not cut it as tomorrow’s customers will expect as much rigor in greenhouse gas (GHG) emission inventories as investors expect from proper financial disclosures.
The primary steps to calculate are simple enough: Gather data on energy use, stationary emissions, transport, etc. Convert data into emissions using calculation tools or third-party data/providers. Review and verify results prior to publishing. Once the footprint has been measured, reporting considerations must take into account customer, stakeholder, and industry standards.
Many of these processes may be new and should command dedicated staff resources or software investments to track, improve, and ultimately result in emission reductions.
