What does this say about the future of automation in the rail industry? Cynically I would say it’s the FRA’s relationship with labor and fighting autonomy to save jobs under the guise of safety. In two other modes, there are similar issues. For the ILWU dockworkers, they flat out say they want to fight autonomy/productivity. And for truck drivers, being mostly non-union, the government (this administration and the last) is actively subsidizing the development and testing of driverless trucks.
